Perhaps blogs can be used 'within' CoPs but also as external sources of communication. This could facilitate 'less legitimate participation', where ideas and content not directly related can be shared without interfering in the main activity of a CoP.
Several good things: - one of the (many) nice things that distinguishes blogs from old-fashioned discussion forums is the sense of ownership felt by people who post. - blog discussion is document centric - helps maintain focus - tags, trackbacks, pings, blogrolls, RSS and associated technologies expand the simple publication of blogs into the larger blogosphere, helping to forge and sustain weak ties between networks and connections between people and ideas. This is the big thing that turns them into social software as opposed to simple discussion or publication tools.
